<p>Most CCTV quotes start with a number of cameras. That is backwards — the number falls out of the coverage you need, and quoting it first is how shops end up with four cameras all pointed at the same aisle.</p>
<h3>Start with the points that matter</h3>
<p>Walk your premises and list the places where something can go wrong: every entrance and exit, the till, the stock room door, the area customers can reach unsupervised, and the outside of the building. Each of those is one camera. For most single-room shops that comes to four to six. A godown or a showroom across two floors is usually eight to sixteen.</p>
<h3>Resolution matters more than count</h3>
<p>Two cameras that can identify a face beat six that only show that a person was there. For identification you want the face filling a reasonable part of the frame — in practice a 4MP camera covering a doorway rather than a 2MP camera covering the whole shop.</p>
<h3>Recording and retention</h3>
<p>Ask how many days of footage the recorder holds at the quoted resolution. Thirty days is a sensible minimum, because problems are often noticed weeks later. Storage is cheap compared to the cost of finding out your recorder only kept four days.</p>
<h3>Night, power and network</h3>
<p>Check the night performance in person, not on a spec sheet. Ask what happens to recording during a power cut, and whether the setup keeps working when the internet is down — a system that only records to the cloud stops recording when the connection does.</p>
